Sectra’s new security solution for smartphones protects users against eavesdropping

The security authority in the Netherlands has approved Sectra’s new solution for secure communications with smartphones. The solution, which is known as Panthon 3, has been approved for secure calls and secure text messaging at the Restricted classification level for smartphone using the Android operating system.

Using today’s technology, it is relatively easy to eavesdrop on telephone calls and messages, which entails a security threat for individuals, organizations and nations. This has been a focus of attention on a number of occasions during the year, most recently in conjunction with the Prism surveillance program in the US. Using the Panthon security solution, all information is encrypted all the way from one smartphone to another, thus rending eavesdropping impossible.

“Android currently accounts for about 70% of the smartphone market and we foresee a substantial unmet need for a product like Panthon. We had our first users even prior to securing formal approval from the security authority in the Netherlands and Panthon is now under evaluation for approval by the EU and NATO Restricted,” says Michael Bertilsson, President of Sectra’s Secure Communications business area.

Sectra’s security solution for smartphones is just as easy to use as a normal smartphone. It is also easy to operate, particularly if you choose to purchase Panthon in the form of a service, in which case an organization can quickly begin communicating securely without having to make major investments.

To achieve a high level of accessibility and flexibility, Panthon works on both conventional mobile networks and on WLAN. In areas with substandard coverage, it is advantageous to use secure text messaging.
