US breast center introduces osteoporosis testing together with mammography screening
Allison Breast Center, Richmond, VA, in the US has deployed Sectra OneScreen from the medical imaging IT company, Sectra (STO: SECT B). This will allow Allison Breast Center to offer women osteoporosis testing through a hand x-ray taken at the conclusion of the screening mammogram. Allison Breast Center will be the first breast center in the US to offer women this opportunity in combination with mammography.
“We can now offer our patients osteoporosis screening in conjunction with their annual mammogram,” says General Manager, Gillian Bigg, SRN. “We have accomplished an important core value of providing low radiation dose of breast and bone. Additionally, the ability to provide an inexpensive and convenient method of determining osteoporosis risk is a competitive advantage for our practice.”
Sectra OneScreen is a simple first step in identifying patients in the risk group for osteoporosis. The service is based on a single, standard x-ray of the hand which is taken on the same equipment as the breast images. There is no need for additional investment in equipment, staff, or examination rooms. Sectra OneScreen provides a fraction of the dose received in a traditional osteoporosis examination. The method is supported by strong medical evidence and has a proven capacity, comparable with other prevailing methods, as a predictor of future fractures but at a significantly lower cost.
