Platform for medical education revolutionizes radiology recruitment

At the forefront of radiology services, Telemedicine Clinic (TMC) supports hospitals in Europe by offering remote reading and reporting on radiology images. By integrating Sectra Education Portal into their recruitment process, TMC is not only redefining how radiologists are recruited, but also setting new standards in remote diagnostic services. We meet Leanne Taylor, recruiter at TMC, who explains how this innovative recruitment strategy not only enhances the quality of their services, but also streamlines operational efficiency, ensuring the highest standard of radiological care.

Telemedicine Clinic (TMC) offers remote diagnostic services and specialized radiology reporting day and night. Today, they support more than 150 hospitals in the UK, Sweden, and Denmark using a collaborative network of more than 350 radiologists. They have been using Sectra’s cloud-based platform for medical education (Sectra Education Portal) in recruiting radiologists for just over a year. It provides them with a multidisciplinary library of real patient images and advanced visualization tools, as well as the option to add their own clinical cases to a private space.

Leanne Taylor is one of TMC’s recruiters. She explains that they use the education portal as a step in their recruitment process to ensure hiring of quality radiologists. Candidates are assessed on their expertise and specialization by analyzing and reporting on patient cases presented on the portal. The number of cases varies based on the role applied for, and all tests are crafted by TMC’s radiologists.

From a recruitment point of view, we have loved it. It enables us to perform our roles more efficiently and quickly. Given that 99 percent encounter no technical issues, we can even conduct tests on weekends without needing to be present.

Taylor explains the testing process in detail: “We schedule the test cases and then add the candidates to the platform with log in and password. We then provide them with links to patient cases in the portal and clinical information on the patient.” By examining the images together with the clinical information written, the candidates proceed to formulate accurate diagnosis.

Before this remote testing approach, the tests required candidates to travel to Spain or the UK, an expensive requirement, she notes. “Previously, we used other platforms for remote testing. They were similar to the Sectra portal but involved longer processes and the functionality wasn’t as much. Sectra offers more functionality.” In terms of functionality, previous vendors presented technical challenges and limitations in testing multiple radiologists simultaneously. “Those were our two biggest speedbumps,” she explains.

With Sectra’s portal they are able to test multiple candidates concurrently which has streamlined the recruitment process significantly. “From a recruitment point of view, we have loved it. It enables us to perform our roles more efficiently and quickly. Given that 99 percent encounter no technical issues, we can even conduct tests on weekends without needing to be present,” she adds.

Additionally, since TMC’s radiologists use Sectra’s radiology PACS, these tests provide a realistic idea of the cases candidates can expect to encounter if hired. “We let them know during the interviews that we use Sectra’s PACS when reporting. It is good for them to see the platform.”

Looking ahead, Taylor indicates that TMC plans to continue with the current system. “At the moment everything is working absolutely perfectly. The test cases are here to stay. We are happy with the system and process that we do.”

She concludes, “And the candidates have all the tools they need—everything is there. We continue to receive positive feedback and are very happy with the system.”
